Mainline construction on the Dan Ryan Expressway has begun. The expressway has been reduced to three open lanes in each direction from 13th Street to the I-57 Interchange so our Road Doctors can build a safer, less congested Dan Ryan.

Cars Off, Trucks On. Heavy trucks should stay on the expressway while passenger vehicles are encouraged to AVOID THE DAN RYAN by using public transportation, the Chicago Skyway or alternate routes. IDOT's recommended alternate routes are Ashland Ave. and the combination of Stony Island Ave./Lake Shore Drive or the Chicago Skyway. There is a way out. Reroute!

Incidentally, Chicago holds an important place in the history of transportation schedules. It was here that the heads of all the major railroads met in the 1880s to adopt the Standard Time System, still in use today. Previously, time had been established locally based on "high noon," resulting in hundreds of local times, making a mess of regional and national train schedules. Even though the new system was instituted just for the railroads, it was adopted by most states almost immediately and finally officially adopted by the U.S. government almost fifty years later. Transportation systems around the country have been working to be "On Time" ever since.
